Faux Neon Sign (2022)

LED sign lit up in the dark

Particleboard sign routing to test light fits

Motivation:

Lauren Platt (MIT ‘22) made one and I liked the project, so I made one too. I then used this project to run a class to teach people how to approach new projects.

Description:

The design started in illustrator and then was moved into fusion360 for CAM. The lights are inset into thick acrylic and are soldered together into one chain. All light paths are within increments of 1”.

Lessons Learned:

I have always known that soldering with lead free solder is a pain, but I didn't realize how much of a pain it was until trying to use it on the thin paper backing the LED light strips. I also wish I had ordered white heat shrink in advance instead of using the black.
