Description:

I was awarded a $1000 grant to run a class on how to make MIG welded lamps from the Morningside Design Fellowship. Through Metropolis, the Makerspace I mentor in, I created and ran a week long class on how to make a welded lamp. The class covered the mig welder, ironworker, cold saw, disk sander, angle grinder, air sanders, and work fixturing. 107people were interested in the class, but I only had the space, time, and resources to take 6 students. The primary goal was to teach people how to make something nice from concept to finished item. Students were encouraged to think about the scale of their lamps before beginning as well as the center of gravity of their lamps. Students ranged from first year undergrads to 6th year graduate students.
